Who it’s for

Which vehicles need a Class 7 MOT?

  • Goods vehicles over 3,000kg and up to 3,500kg design gross weight
  • Larger panel vans — many 3.5-tonne long-wheelbase and high-roof vans
  • Lutons, dropsides and tippers built on a 3.5-tonne chassis

It’s the design gross weight that counts, not the size: many large vans are plated at 3,500kg and need Class 7, while lighter versions of the same models can be plated at 3,000kg or less and take a Class 4 MOT.

The test

What’s checked

Every test follows the DVSA’s MOT inspection manual for the vehicle’s class, and the result goes straight onto the DVSA’s MOT record. A Class 7 test covers the same items as a Class 4, assessed against the standards for heavier goods vehicles.

  • Brakes
  • Steering and suspension
  • Tyres, wheels and axles
  • Lights, reflectors and electrics
  • Seatbelts and seats
  • Body, chassis and structure
  • Windscreen, wipers, washers and mirrors
  • Exhaust, emissions and fuel system
  • Horn, registration plates and VIN

FAQs

Class 7 MOT questions

How do I find my van's design gross weight?
It’s on the manufacturer’s plate — often inside the driver’s door frame or under the bonnet — and on your V5C logbook as the maximum permissible mass. Over 3,000kg and up to 3,500kg means Class 7.
My van is over 3,500kg — can it have an MOT here?
No — goods vehicles over 3,500kg have an annual test at a DVSA testing facility instead of an MOT.
When is a van's first MOT due?
By the third anniversary of its registration, then one every year.
How early can I get my MOT done?
Up to a month (minus a day) before your current MOT runs out — and you keep the same renewal date. Not sure when yours is due? Use our free MOT check.
What happens if my vehicle fails?
You’ll get a refusal of an MOT certificate listing each defect, and we’ll talk you through them. You can drive the vehicle away only if your old MOT is still valid and nothing was marked ‘dangerous’ — otherwise it needs repairing first. Retests are charged in line with the DVSA’s rules, and we’ll tell you the cost before any retest.
What if I disagree with the result?
Talk to us first — we’ll go through it with you. You can also appeal to the DVSA within 14 working days of the test.
